Bangladesh's Third Highest Peak
Keokradong at 986 m was long believed to be Bangladesh's highest peak before more accurate measurements confirmed Tazingdong and Saka Haphong as higher. It remains one of the most popular summit targets in the country — accessible in two days from Bandarban, with a clear trail and community guesthouse infrastructure along the route.
The name Keokradong translates loosely as 'the peak that tears clouds' in the local language. On clear mornings, the description is accurate.
The Route from Ruma Bazar
Most hikers begin at Ruma Bazar, a small market town 47 km from Bandarban reachable by jeep or motorbike. From Ruma, the trail climbs steadily for 9 km to Boga Lake (1,246 m), where most hikers spend the first night.
The Boga Lake to Keokradong section (Day 2) is shorter in distance but more demanding in terrain. The trail drops from the lake before climbing again to the Keokradong ridge. The final 2 km follows the exposed ridge to the summit beacon.
What You'll Find at the Summit
The Keokradong summit has a small army observation post and a summit marker. Views extend across layered ridgelines toward Myanmar on clear mornings; cloud cover is common after 9 am even on good weather days.
Sunrise from Keokradong is the primary motivation for most trekkers. Camp at Boga Lake and depart by 4:30 am to reach the summit for first light — the two-hour climb in headlamp-lit darkness is worth the predawn start.
Practical Information
Permits are required and must be arranged at the Bandarban DC office before departure. A licensed guide is mandatory for the Boga Lake–Keokradong section. Budget two full days minimum; three days allows a more relaxed pace and time to explore the lake circuit.
Guesthouses at Ruma Bazar and Boga Lake provide basic meals and accommodation. Book ahead during peak season (November–February). Carry sufficient cash — ATMs are unavailable past Bandarban town.
